Our original mission statement

The Violoncello Society, Inc. aims to promote the art of 'cello playing in this country, provide a common meeting ground for professional and amateur 'cellists, promote interest in the 'cello as a solo instrument, provide opportunity of performances for artist and composer, develop a broader and more mature understanding of the art of the 'cello, and further the members artistic development.

The Society is dedicated to fulfilling its goals by embracing the great tradition of cello playing and showcasing some of the finest exponents of the instrument. Cello playing has exploded in popularity in recent years due to its inclusion in all genres today. Our events reflect this genre as well as the tradition we all love. Meetings include recitals, master classes, lecture-demonstrations, tributes, and other events celebrating the cello. We are always seeking new works and forms of expression that are of interest to cello lovers everywhere. We also have "play-ins" simply for the joy and fun of making music together.

The society was formed in 1956, the same year the highly acclaimed cellist Mstislav Rostropovich made his New York debut and visited with the VCS Board. Since that time, the organization has hosted cellists such as Yo Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell and, most recently, Jean-Guihen Queras. Luminaries of the past include Gregor Piatgorsky, Janos Starker, Zara Nelsova as well as the Founders of the VCS.
